"Let food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food." - Hippocrates

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, each of the foods we eat corresponds to different organs. For example, foods that are white in colour, such as garlic, chicken breast, and leeks represent the metal element in TCM's Five Element Theory. Metal elements affect the lung system within the body. With this in mind, incorporating more white foods into one's diet can help to build strong immunity, open up the airways and strengthen the function of the lungs.

When one catches a cold, it is symbolic of a weak digestive system, including the spleen function. The ginger and leek in this recipe warms the body, nourishes the spleen and lungs, and produces more sweat, which, in turn, can release the coldness from the body.
